Varicose Veins:
Understanding, Treatment,
and Prevention
Welcome to this presentation on varicose veins, where we'll explore their
causes, symptoms, treatments, and prevention strategies.
What are Varicose Veins? Causes and Risk Factors
What are they?
Varicose veins are twisted, enlarged veins that become visible
on the surface of the skin. They typically occur in the legs but
can also appear in other areas.
Causes and Risk Factors
Varicose veins develop when valves inside veins weaken,
causing blood to pool and the veins to become enlarged.
Factors like age, genetics, pregnancy, obesity, and prolonged
standing can increase risk.
Symptoms and Diagnosis: Recognizing the Signs
Aching, pain, or heaviness in the
legs.
Swelling in the ankles and feet,
especially at the end of the day.
Visible, twisted, or bulging veins.
Itching, burning, or tingling sensations in the legs. Skin discoloration or ulcers near the affected veins.
Treatment Options: From Conservative Measures to
Advanced Procedures
Lifestyle Changes
Weight management, regular exercise, compression stockings, and
elevation of the legs.
Sclerotherapy
Injecting a solution into the veins to make them collapse.
Laser Treatment
Using a laser to heat and close affected veins.
Radiofrequency Ablation
Using heat to seal off varicose veins.
Lifestyle Changes and
Prevention: Long-Term
Management
Maintain a healthy
weight to reduce
pressure on veins.
Engage in regular
exercise, especially
walking and swimming.
Wear compression
stockings to improve
blood flow and reduce
swelling.
Elevate your legs when
possible to promote
blood flow.

The human apical sodium-dependent bile acid transporter (ASBT), also known as SLC10A2, is a crucial membrane protein that plays an essential role in the absorption and recycling of bile acids. ASBT is primarily expressed in the enterocytes (intestinal cells) of the ileum, which is the final part of the small intestine. It is also present, to a lesser extent, in other tissues like the liver and kidney. The primary function of ASBT is to mediate the sodium-dependent uptake of bile acids from the lumen of the intestine back into the enterocytes. Bile acids, which are produced in the liver and stored in the gallbladder, are secreted into the small intestine to aid in the digestion and absorption of dietary fats and fat-soluble vitamins. After performing their digestive functions, about 95% of bile acids are reabsorbed by ASBT in the ileum and returned to the liver via the portal circulation. This process is known as the enterohepatic circulation.ASBT operates by utilizing the electrochemical gradient of sodium ions (Na⁺) across the intestinal membrane. It couples the transport of bile acids to the transport of sodium ions, thus requiring the presence of sodium for efficient bile acid reabsorption. This allows the body to conserve bile acids, preventing excessive loss in feces and maintaining the bile acid pool needed for digestion.

special senses-HEARING , VESTIBULAR - IN DETAIL LECTURE NOTES by JELLA VISHNU DURGA PRASAD, has 54 slides with 8 views.Special senses - Hearing and Vestibular Anatomy of Hearing The human ear is a complex organ responsible for two primary functions: hearing and balance. Its anatomical structure is divided into three main sections: the outer ear, middle ear, and inner ear. Each section plays a critical role in capturing, transmitting, and processing sound waves into electrical signals that the brain interprets as sound. 1. Outer Ear The outer ear collects sound waves from the environment and channels them toward the middle ear. It consists of: Pinna (Auricle) • The visible external part of the ear. • Acts as a funnel to direct sound waves into the ear canal. • Helps in sound localization by amplifying specific frequencies. External Auditory Canal • A tube-like structure that extends from the pinna to the tympanic membrane (eardrum). • Lined with skin containing ceruminous glands that produce earwax to protect against debris and microorganisms. • Amplifies sound waves, particularly in the range of 2,000 to 5,000 Hz. Tympanic Membrane (Eardrum) • A thin, oval-shaped membrane separating the outer ear from the middle ear. • Vibrates in response to sound waves, converting air vibrations into mechanical energy. 2. Middle Ear The middle ear is an air-filled cavity located within the temporal bone. It amplifies and transmits sound vibrations from the tympanic membrane to the inner ear. Key components include: Ossicles • Three tiny bones—the malleus (hammer), incus (anvil), and stapes (stirrup)—form a chain that transmits vibrations. o Malleus: Attached to the tympanic membrane. o Incus: Connects the malleus and stapes. o Stapes: The smallest bone in the body; its footplate fits into the oval window of the cochlea. • These bones amplify sound by approximately 20 times. Eustachian Tube • A narrow canal connecting the middle ear to the nasopharynx. • Equalizes air pressure on both sides of the tympanic membrane, ensuring optimal vibration. • Opens briefly during swallowing or yawning. Oval Window and Round Window • The stapes transmits vibrations to the oval window, which leads to fluid movement in the cochlea. • The round window compensates for pressure changes within the cochlea. 3. Inner Ear The inner ear, also known as the labyrinth, is a fluid-filled structure housed within the temporal bone. It contains sensory organs for hearing (cochlea) and balance (vestibular system). Cochlea • A spiral-shaped, snail-like structure responsible for hearing. • Divided into three chambers: o Scala Vestibuli: Contains perilymph fluid; receives vibrations from the oval window. o Scala Media (Cochlear Duct): Contains endolymph fluid and houses the organ of Corti. o Scala Tympani: Contains perilymph fluid; ends at the round window. • The basilar membrane within the cochlea varies in stiffness along its length: o High-frequency sounds are detected at its base (near oval window). o Low-frequency sounds are detected at its apex. How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental Health by ThinkNow, has 21 slides with 36413 views.Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits. To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups. Technology For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did. While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis. Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad. Age and Gender When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same. Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers. Race Affects Attitudes As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

Google's Just Not That Into You: Understanding Core Updates & Search Intent by Lily Ray, has 99 slides with 18518 views.1. Core updates from Google periodically change how its algorithms assess and rank websites and pages. This can impact rankings through shifts in user intent, site quality issues being caught up to, world events influencing queries, and overhauls to search like the E-A-T framework. 2. There are many possible user intents beyond just transactional, navigational and informational. Identifying intent shifts is important during core updates. Sites may need to optimize for new intents through different content types and sections. 3. Responding effectively to core updates requires analyzing "before and after" data to understand changes, identifying new intents or page types, and ensuring content matches appropriate intents across video, images, knowledge graphs and more.
